Working hours calculator
Enter start time, end time, and unpaid break duration to get net hours worked for a shift. Stack multiple days for weekly totals — useful for hourly workers, contractors, and managers verifying timesheets before payroll submission.
How to calculate working hours
1. Enter shift start time (e.g. 09:00).
2. Enter shift end time (e.g. 17:30).
3. Enter unpaid break minutes (e.g. 30 for lunch).
4. Read net hours; add rows for additional days if the tool supports weekly mode.
Working hours examples
Standard office day
09:00–17:30 with 30 min lunch → 8.0 hours net.
Split shift
08:00–12:00 and 13:00–17:00 with no break → 4 + 4 = 8 hours.
Overtime week
Mon–Fri 9h each = 45h; policy may pay OT over 40h — calculator shows raw hours only.
When to use the working hours calculator
• When you reconcile handwritten timesheets with pay periods.
• When you estimate invoice hours for client billing.
• When you track part-time variable schedules across the week.
Overtime and labor law disclaimer
US FLSA, EU working time directive, and other rules define overtime thresholds, break requirements, and on-call time differently. This calculator outputs elapsed net hours — HR and legal teams apply policy.
Frequently asked questions
Are breaks subtracted automatically?
Enter break duration explicitly — unpaid lunch is not inferred unless configured.
Overnight shifts?
End before start may imply next-day end (22:00–06:00 = 8h) if tool supports crossing midnight.
Rounding to quarter hours?
Some employers round 7–14 min to 0.25h — apply policy after raw calculation.
Paid vs unpaid breaks?
Only subtract unpaid breaks from worked time unless local law says otherwise.
Decimal hours output?
8h 30m often shown as 8.5 for payroll systems — useful for CSV export.
